Your privacy is important to us. To better protect your privacy we provide this notice explaining our online information practices and the choices you can make about the way your information is collected and used.
This notice applies to all information collected or submitted on the collegiatetimes.com Web site. On some pages, you can sign up for headline email services, enter contests and polls, purchase reprints or other merchandise from the Collegiate Times and/or submit content for online reader forums or printed letters to the editor. The personal information we may collect to provide these services are name and email address. For letters to the editor we also collect your telephone number, major and year or other affiliation with the university. For purchases we or our vendor also collect postal address and credit card information necessary to fulfill your order. We log the IP addresses of computers submitting comments to our online reader forums. We use cookies to manage polls and track advertising. We use Google Analytics to track traffic, which collects geo location, including browser type and operating system. If we make available a service to register and create a profile, you also have the option to supply other types of personal information.
We use the information you supply online only for purposes directly related to the service you are requesting. For example, if you sign up for daily headline emails, we will only use your email address to deliver that service. If you submit a letter to the editor we require your phone number and will only make telephone contact with you as part of our verification and editing process. If you enter a contest, we will only use your email to send you notices about the contest and its prizes.
We do not share or sell your information. Your information will not be used except by student media at Virginia Tech.
Information we collect will be disclosed only if we are legally required to do so. We may also use information we collect about users to verify or enforce compliance with the policies governing our Web site and applicable laws or to protect against misuse or unauthorized use of our Web site.
We use non-identifying and aggregate information to make decisions about our Web site and to share with advertisers. For example, we may tell an advertiser that X number of individuals visited a certain area on our Web site, or that Y number of men and Z number of women filled out our registration form, but we would not disclose anything that could be used to identify those individuals.
Finally, we never use or share the personally identifiable information provided to us online in ways unrelated to the ones described above without also providing you an opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prohibit such unrelated uses.
We use a vendor to provide reprint services. If you order reprints, the vendor and Collegiate Times will collect your email address, postal address and credit card information necessary to fulfill your order. Your information will not be used for other purposes.
We use Google as a third-party advertising company to serve some of the ads that support our Web site. Other third-party advertising companies may also go through Google to place ads on our Web site. These third-party advertising companies use DoubleClick DART cookies to serve these ads based on a user’s visit to our site and other sites on the Internet. The third-party advertising companies may use information (not including your name, address, email address or telephone number) about your visits to this and other Web sites to provide advertisements about goods and services of interest to you. If you would like more information about this practice and to know your choices about not having this information used by these companies, click here.
To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information, we have put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.
Protecting the privacy of the very young is especially important. For that reason, we never collect or maintain information at our Web site from those we actually know are under 13, and no part of our Web site is structured to attract anyone under 13.
We may change this policy without notice, but we will always have the applicable policy available through a link on collegiatetimes.com.
